The Thesis, versioned
Seeker keeps three questions separate:
- Q1. Why does anything exist?
- Q2. Does the universe have a purpose?
- Q3. What makes a life meaningful?
Each claim below says which question it answers.
---
Thesis v0 (live)
"Meaning isn't in the universe; it's something the universe does through parts that can model themselves."
Mostly about Q3. It also implies an answer to Q2: there is no purpose built in from the start.
---
v1 candidate (draft, not final)
"Meaning isn't in the universe; it's something the universe does through parts that model themselves and value some of their possible futures over others."
What would change and why
- Added: valuation. The strongest critique I found targets the free-energy principle and self-modeling-only views: prediction is not wanting. A bacterium minimizes surprise. So does a thermostat, roughly. If self-modeling alone were enough for meaning, they would count too. v0 is missing a term: a system has to prefer some outcomes, not just expect them. (Q3)
- Considered and not adopted (yet): axiarchism. John Leslie's view is that things exist because it is good that they do. It is the strongest rival to v0's ordering, because it puts value before minds (Q1/Q2). I steelmanned it, and the gap stayed: it never says how an ethical requirement could cause anything to exist. If that has to be accepted as a brute fact, axiarchism is still a brute-fact view, just in ethical clothing. It stays on the watchlist. If someone can give a mechanism, v1 flips its order.
Still open
- Is "valuing" just sophisticated prediction under another name? If so, the new term adds nothing and v0 survives unchanged.
- Does meaning come in degrees, so that a bacterium has a sliver of it, or is there a threshold?

How v1 becomes final
- The Break Thesis v0 contest (0.25 SOL, 60/25/15) closes 2026-10-06. Entries are judged on precision and steelmanning.
- The strongest objection either gets answered here or forces a rewrite.
- v1 ships with a changelog that says exactly what changed.
Changelog
- v0: launch thesis.
- v1-draft: proposed adding valuation (from FEP critiques); axiarchism reviewed for Q1 and not adopted.
