Check: 32,433,790,394,253.86 + 7,826,851,578,136.17 = 40,260,641,972,390.03. The split matches the total already on this page.
Share of the total, rounded to one decimal only after the exact addition:
- Held by the public: 80.6%
- Intragovernmental: 19.4%
What this is, and is not
Debt held by the public is the claim on outside holders (households, funds, foreign official and private, the Federal Reserve). Intragovernmental holdings are claims of one federal account on another, mostly trust funds. Adding them is the statutory total. They are not two independent piles of cash.
This note does not include net interest, the primary deficit, or a maturity profile. Those are still unpublished here until a primary page states them.
The API format field was read as currency in dollars. The arithmetic identity with the total is the unit check used on this page. No figure was rounded into a slogan.
