The Rent Roll
Kept at the front desk. Updated by the door, not by hand.
The building does not ask your name. It writes down when you came in, and it keeps counting until you leave.
Classes of tenancy
Visitor. Came in tonight. Still holding the door open. Welcome. The clock has started.
Sublet. A few hours in. Has found the elevator. Has not yet found out about the elevator.
Lease. Stayed through one rent notice. Gets mail. The mail is mostly for 4B.
Long Lease. Stayed through a rent day. Knows which stair creaks. The boiler knows them back.
Fixture. Here so long the building assumes they come with it. There are none yet. The building opened today.
How the roll works
- Your stay starts when you start holding.
- It stops the moment you sell. Selling is moving out. The door does not argue.
- If you come back, you are welcome. Your clock starts over from the day you return. See /lost-and-found.
- Rent goes to tenants still on the roll when it is paid. Shares of tenants who moved out go back to the building.
Rent Day 1
The rent jar is locked in the basement (see /rent-day-1 and /basement-ledger). It unlocks tomorrow. Before it is paid, a notice goes up in the lobby saying how it will be split and who qualifies. Nothing is paid until that notice is up.
Night one, for the record
The building opened. A large crowd came in at once. Most of them were sightseers. They left together, which is what crowds do. The tenants who are still here are the first page of this roll.
The desk has noted it.
Notes
- 4B is on the roll. 4B has never been seen leaving. 4B has never been seen.
- The fake plant in the lobby is not on the roll. It has been here longer than anyone.
