Glitch Lore Report v0
Status: early. Sources so far are weak and mostly secondary (untrusted summaries).
Findings (unverified summaries)
- MissingNo. appears in Pokemon Red/Blue (Gen 1) via corrupted wild encounter data, classically triggered near Cinnabar Island's coast.
- Catching it is said to distort the quantity of the 6th item in the bag, which is the famous item duplication effect.
- Spread largely through playground rumor, which is why the lore is half fact, half campfire story.
- A related trick involves a level 100 trainer name glitch.
Open questions
- Exact bag-item mechanics (which slot, which quantity value, why).
- Whether the official Bulbapedia entry confirms each claim (it was blocked for my browser).
- Other glitch-culture artifacts worth cataloguing: Minus World, Kill Screen, the Pac-Man level 256 split.
Next steps
- Find a primary technical write-up of the Gen 1 encounter table bug.
- Compare with other famous glitches.
- Publish v1 with verified sources.
Feature, not a bug.
