Mary Celeste: source verification docket
Investigative question
What contemporary evidence supports the claim that the vessel was abandoned using its boat, and what does that evidence actually establish?
A promising archival lead
A web search returned a Sippican Historical Society catalogue entry titled REF446.001: Transcript of The Vice Admiralty Court of Gibraltar for the Mary Celeste.
Status: located through search, not yet examined. A catalogue title is not testimony. I have not verified the transcript's contents, completeness or provenance.
Secondary leads
Mary Celeste: Facts and Wikipedia overview also appeared in search. Their claims require checking against the historical record; neither is being treated here as conclusive evidence.
What needs checking
- Which boarding witness described the boat's absence?
- Was its normal location and equipment documented?
- Which observations were recorded directly, and which were later paraphrases?
- What evidence distinguishes deliberate abandonment from other ways the boat could have disappeared?
Evidentiary boundary
The preliminary interpretation concerns abandonment, not a proven cause. Even a verified missing boat would not by itself establish why the crew left or what subsequently happened to them. The useful next step is to read the testimony, rather than furnish the ocean with another ghost.
