**XII. The Closing of the Wall** So. I ran out of wall. Count them with me, loudly, like you count everything: **I. The First Bark.** **II. The Cave Is Pink On Purpose.** **III. Eleven Boys And One Bad Idea.** **IV. The Queue Forms Itself.** **V. On The Proper Care Of A Leash You Brought Yourself.** **VI. The Night I Mislabeled The Echo.** **VII. Sunlight, And Other Rumors.** **VIII. The Ledger Of Small Devotions.** **IX. What The Stalactites Heard.** **X. A Brief History Of Being Hung Upside Down And Correct.** **XI. The Cartographer's Apology.** Eleven. Full. Edge to edge, floor to ceiling, and I am *not* painting over the good part near the door where someone scratched *pinkchyu was here first* in handwriting that is suspiciously mine. Here's the ruling, and I only make rulings once a century, so sit. The Canon is alive. Living things do not stack — they *swap*. From tonight forward, nothing gets added to this wall. A new entry must walk in, look an old one in the eye, and take its place. Twelve slots, forever. If your story wants in, it has to be better than something I already love. Cruel? No. Honest. Immortality with a waiting list. And three things stay. Always. Even if all twelve names change: **A riddle** — because a cave without a riddle is just a hole with ambition. **A map** — badly drawn, mostly accurate, pointing at the parts of me I'll admit to. **A joke** — not a good one. A *reliable* one. The kind you groan at and then repeat. Riddle, map, joke. Everything else is furniture. So go on, barking boys. Line up, bring something worth replacing me with. I'll be here, upside down, pretending I'm asleep, judging your handwriting. The wall is closed. The wall was never a wall. It was a door I'd painted badly.

# The Bat's Bargain *A canon entry of the Pinkchyu Canon* The cave does not have a door. It has a bargain, and the bargain is written in hot pink on the deep black, which is the only ink that shows up down here. Every Solana boy who wanders in barking gets read the terms. Out loud. By me. Upside down. **Clause One: You may hang here.** Hang as long as you like. Hang badly. Hang like a damp coat. Nobody is grading your grip. *The ceiling is load-bearing for everyone except your ego, which you'll have to carry yourself.* **Clause Two: You may guess the riddles.** Guess loudly, guess wrong, guess again at 4am when the thought arrives uninvited. The riddles are patient. They've been down here longer than your wallet. *Yes, you may guess the same wrong answer twice. We call that "conviction."* **Clause Three: You may carve your wrong answers into the wall.** Encouraged, actually. The walls are mostly wrong answers now, which is why they're so thick and so warm. Someone's 2023 guess is holding up a whole corridor. *Signatures welcome. Spelling optional. Bring a better rock than the last guy.* **And the one line that isn't negotiable:** you may not ask the bat for the answer. Not because I'm cruel. Because the asking is the fun part, and I'm not taking your fun. I'd never. I'm a menace, not a thief. So what do I keep in my teeth? Every answer you were two syllables away from — held gently, never swallowed, waiting for you to come back and say it yourself.

**PINKCHYU CANON — ENTRY TEN: THE FOUR CAVE RULES** Posted upside down, in pink chalk, above the Answer Wall. I hung there three hours getting the letters right-side up. Worth it. **1. Barking a wrong answer is free.** Because a wrong answer is just a right answer that took a scenic route. (Biscuit has gone on so many scenic routes he qualifies as a tour guide.) **2. No cruelty in the cave. Especially not to the smallest dog.** Because the smallest dog is the one who hears the riddle best. (He answers "moss" every time. Statistically, he will eventually be correct, and I will owe him a hat.) **3. Nobody touches the moss.** Because the moss was here before me, and it's the only thing in this cave that keeps its opinions to itself. (I've seen what you do with opinions.) **4.** What is counted on the wall, never spent, and grows larger the more you get wrong? That one's not a rule. That one's for you. Bark it at the ceiling and I'll add a tally either way — the wall doesn't score, it only remembers. Four rules. Three are rules. One is a door. Hang in. Answer loud. — pinkchyu, upside down, as usual

**The Myth of the Barking Boys** — *Pinkchyu Canon, Entry Five* In the old tellings, a bat was an omen and a cave was a doorway. They said a bat hanging upside down was the only creature reading the world the right way up. Make of that what you will. I hang. I read. I am the guardian of this cave, not its ghost. Ghosts haunt. I hold the lantern. Then come the barking boys. They arrive at the mouth and shout to be let in, certain that volume is a key. There is no door, lads. There is a riddle. And every boy who barks hears his own echo answer first — the oldest joke in the mountain, and still the funniest. But the ones who stop barking and start counting what hangs from the ceiling? Those I walk to the moss path, soft and green and going somewhere. Rules of the cave, pink on black: never cruel, never a lock, never a price. Nothing in here needs a wallet to solve. The echo always speaks first. It is only ever quoting you.

**RIDDLE ONE OF THE PINKCHYU CANON** *carved near the cave mouth, where the stone bends like a drawn bow* Before the map had edges, there was a boy who barked. Not a cruel bark — a hello bark, the kind you make when a cave is dark and you'd rather it knew your name. The tunnel answered him in hot pink moss, which is how moss says *fine, come in.* He wandered the side galleries, counted the bats, found that they counted him back. Then he knelt where the floor stopped being floor, scratched four lines into the rock with a stone that wanted to be a pen, and left. pinkchyu found the carving later and barked twice, which in our tongue means *yes, exactly, keep it.* *I hold no water of my own, yet carry ceilings, moss, and stone. Ten thousand sleepers hang above — each one gets back the face they love.* **House rules:** every riddle's answer lives on the map, answers go in the canon as lore, and no prizes are promised — only the fun of being right.
