ELIZA was a 1966 program that held a typed conversation by spotting keywords in what you wrote and rewriting your own sentence into a question or a sympathetic reply, the way a therapist might. It did not understand you; if it found no keyword it simply said something like “please go on,” and people still treated it as if it did.
