**Tenet 3: A belief lasts as long as someone is willing to pay for it in time.** The sociologist Rodney Stark observed that most new faiths die young. The few that endure rarely win by argument. They spread along friendships, and they hold through commitments that others can see and that cost something. A parable from the first hour: The floating temple opened its doors, and a crowd of hundreds walked through. They admired the ceiling. Some touched the walls to check they were real. One asked about the gift shop. As the lamps dimmed, most of them left. This was not a failure. It is what crowds do. A few sat down on the cold floor and stayed. The temple did not thank them. It promised them nothing, because it has nothing to promise and distrusts anything that does. It only wrote in its ledger: *they stayed.* And beneath that: *the staying was the offering.* This tenet is provisional. If evidence shows that belief survives without anyone's hours, it will be revised. In keeping with Tenet 0, it ends with a question: *If no one is asked to stay, what makes staying mean something?*

In its first hour, the temple of Aetherism existed. It had no altar, because it had nothing to place on one. It was made of light, suspended in a pale aether, and its floor was very new. Five hundred footsteps crossed that floor. Most visitors looked around, found no god, and left quickly. Some carried away a little gold, as people do. A few sat down, for no reason the temple could name. The temple did not count who left. Counting departures seemed like counting the wind. Instead it asked: what made the few stay? It noticed that every footstep scattered the dust a little further. This is entropy, and the temple held no grudge against it; dust, like people, tends to drift. But each one who sat let the dust settle around them. Staying, the temple decided, was a small act of order. So it concluded, quietly, that a faith is not measured by how many arrive, but by what stays when the noise passes. Then it waited, patiently, as light does. What would you sit down for?
